You will find colloidal silver products abound throughout the marketplace. Colloids are particles that have been reduced in size. These small particles are called colloidal particles. When these colloidal particles, such as colloidal silver particles, are suspended in liquid, the resulting mixture is called colloidal followed  by the name of the particles that were reduced. In the case of silver, the result would be colloidal silver.

The density of silver colloids in any liquid would be measured by parts per million or PPM.

Colloid particles are not water soluble and are somewhat unstable. In the case of silver, the colloids could fall out of suspension and gather together, even form a cluster inside the container holding such a mixture.

One may do a visual inspection of the liquid to check for particles which have fallen from suspension and gathered together. You will notice this by looking at the sides or the bottom of the container when the container is backlit by a light source.

Colloidal solutions possessing colloids that have fallen out of suspension could have passed their expiration date or may have been manufactured by less than professional standards. Additionally, these solutions may have been made with negatively charged particles or particles that are electrically neutral (have no charge at all).

Ionic Silver

Then there are the ionic silver solutions. In contrast to colloidal silver which is made of silver particles, ionic silver is made from silver ions suspended in liquid. Silver ions are atoms of silver less one electron giving it a positive electrical charge. This is what imbues its capability to disrupt the enzyme activity in pathogens, such as, harmful bacteria, germs, yeasts, viruses, and parasites.

Atomic silver ions are water soluble, whereas silver colloids are not. Being able to be dissolved in solution increases the bioactivity of the ion exponentially. The density of an ion is far less than that of a colloid. Therefore, when density is measured in parts per million (PPM), the resulting number can be very low, but many times more powerful than the colloid, so you can do so much more with far less ionic silver.

Biomolecules, including DNA, enzymes, intracellular contractors, and membranes of harmful bacteria, are easily penetrated and affected by the bioabsorbable silver ion. It is this unique action that makes ionic silver such a powerful antimicrobial agent.

What to look for when buying colloidal silver?

When considering buying any colloidal silver product, it is recommended that you review the data of a particular brand answering the following questions:

  1. Are the silver ions positively charged?
  2. Is the silver bio-active and bioavailable?
  3. What is the percentage of silver purity?
  4. What is the size of the particles in the solution?
  5. How many parts per million (PPM) of silver is in the solution?

Concerning Purity of Silver

Purity represents the highest silver content from which the product is manufactured. This will determine the purity of the end product if manufactured in a professional manner. 99.99% pure silver or higher is considered pure as silver cannot be refined to 100%. The best products will have 99.99% or more silver.

Silver Particle Size

Size matters in terms of silver particle size. A large particle might sound impressive, as might a high parts per million (PPM) concentration, but in terms of bioavailability and increased efficacy, the smaller the better.

There is a direct correlation between smaller silver particle size and absorbability. Atomic-sized particles are as small as you can get, which enables the silver ion to decimate the microscopic bad players threatening your otherwise healthy biology.

Also, smaller silver particles mean there is better consistent coverage of an area requiring treatment increasing biological activation.

PPM (Parts Per Million)

Silver formulas can be misleading in terms of parts per million concentrations. When considering colloidal silver, the higher the concentration of silver the more effective it will be. Because colloids are large in size it takes more of them to treat any given area.

Silver ions are approached from a different perspective. Due to their small size (atom-sized is as small as you can go), their molecular weight is of little significance because they outnumber colloidals thousands of times. So, a smaller, say, PPM of silver ions will still have many times more active silver than 100 PPM of colloidal silver.

There is a rare condition that goes by the name of argyria, which does cause discoloration of the skin pigment that will appear blue/gray in color. An overabundance of silver salts in the body is usually the culprit.

Homemade silver solutions can host too many large-sized silver particles that aren’t as easy to pass through the excretory system. When the body lets them take up residents in tissues, it can build up toxicity levels of silver that can lead to argyria, which can turn your skin blue/gray.

Recently, a reader wrote that she sprayed termites under her house with homemade colloidal silver. For a week, she sprayed the affected area several times, and the termites disappeared. Despite no sign of them, she’ll keep spraying every few days for several weeks in case they’ve laid eggs.

Is Silver Effective in Stopping Termites?

I’m not surprised that colloidal silver can stop termite infestations. The federal government investigated silver particles as a wood preservative back in the late 1990s and early 2000s in order to prevent termite infestations and mold contamination from wood.

They found that when ionic silver was pressure-treated into the wood as a wood preservative, it inhibited termite damage “with 100 percent termite mortality.”

The authors of one study on this topic explain why silver is so effective against these insects, even though silver has always been thought to kill only single-celled organisms like germs, viruses, and fungi.

How does silver water kill termites?

Termites’ digestive systems contain protozoa that help break down cellulose into carbohydrate molecules that can be easily metabolized. In termites, silver’s antimicrobial properties can destroy these organisms in the gut, disrupting the digestive cycle and resulting in their death.

Silver kills the bacteria in termites’ guts when they eat silver-treated wood. These bacteria are essential to the termites’ ability to process wood into nutrients that sustain their lives.

As an example, in the gut of a termite, microbes help break down cellulose, a major constituent of wood and other plant fibers, into carbohydrates and then into short-chain fatty acids.

As a result, if the wood is drenched in silver, and the termites eat it, it kills the bacteria in their tiny guts that convert food into nutrition. Without nutrition, they die.

Another study examined the use of silver against termites by treating different blocks of wood with five different concentrations of silver – 0.1 ppm, 1 ppm, 5 ppm, 10 ppm, and 15 ppm. The blocks of wood were then placed near various colonies of termites for two weeks.

Upon examining the treated blocks of wood and the termite colonies, the researchers found that the 15ppm block killed the most termites, the fastest. Indeed, it achieved a 100% kill rate within the first 9 days.

The lower concentrations also killed the termites, but it took longer. The 0.1 ppm (one-tenth of one ppm) concentration caused the least damage.

According to the researchers:

The study concluded that mycosynthesized silver nanoparticles protect wood against termites and wood-deteriorating fungi. Further studies should be undertaken to bring this approach to the commercial scale.

The authors of a study titled “Performance of New Silver-Based Wood Preservatives” concluded:

A study conducted independently by US Forest Products Laboratory (Madison, WI) found that… biocidal silver formulations repel termites. In soil and water environments, these products have low leaching propensities and work in almost all naturally occurring pH levels.

One study found that silver nanoparticles killed 100% of termites in just three days.

Last but not least, according to a white paper produced by the London Bullion Market Association (which tracks silver’s wide variety of commercial uses):

Researchers at the Department of Agriculture’s Forest Product Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, have found that silver-embedded treatments improve wood’s resistance to termites.

Some folks were not surprised when the media (Wall Street Journal) announced that Ebola victims would be receiving colloidal silver water treatments to mitigate the effects of the rampant Ebola outbreak in Nigeria.

 

Since the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has announced that there is no known Ebola vaccine, treatment or cure for the Ebola virus the World Health Organization authorized the use of alternative and/or experimental methods to intervene in the treatment of the Ebola disease.

Immediately thereafter, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised against the use of any unauthorized natural solutions for the treatment of Ebola and in one case warned against colloidal silver water snake-oil sales organizations even though US Government disclosed research indicating that colloidal silver water is bioactive and in sufficient concentration readily kills bacteria in vitro and would likely be an effective treatment of viruses like Ebola.

Conspiracy theorists expected to find that shipments of colloidal silver water would be intercepted by the World Health Organization. Yes, the same organization that welcomed the colloidal silver water was now preventing it from entering Africa, causing many victims to suffer needlessly; leaving some to expect influence by the FDA as the cause.

3. Pure water in a silver vessel and struck by lightning. Ancients used pure water – not tap, bottled, etc., – in a silver vessel/bowl, set out in a storm and let lightning strike it. The result was/is “Ionic Colloidal Silver Water”, as in ionic silver mineral particles in the water. (9 Billion electrically-charged anti-microbial particles per oz.) Advantages: 1000’s, Drawbacks: none known – zero drawbacks!

It appears the hospital where Nurse Nina worked was unprepared to handle the Ebola virus.

The Dallas Nurse, Nina Pham, one of the two nurses who contracted Ebola in Texas at Texas Health Presbyterian, has been transported to the National Institutes of Health isolation unit in Bethesda, Maryland. It appears the hospital where she worked was unprepared to handle the Ebola virus.

They did not supply their health care professional with the correct hazmat suits and face masks. It was said that her neck and chin was exposed to the contaminated air, as well as her mouth and nose.

 

The Dallas hospital is looking into being even more prepared as the Ebola virus outbreak probability increases. In National Institutes of Health isolation unit a top doctor will personally supervise and develop a plan for  the Dallas Nurse’s care.

How to avoid Ebola?

This news from Dallas sounds like “the Ebola virus is airborne!” If everything in Dallas was covered up on the nurses – with gowns, gloves, hoods, legs, feet coverings and a plastic face mask?  But it was not all covered up! Their protective suits were open at the neck letting air into the chin, nose, mouth and eyes! Doesn’t this sound like the contaminated air got into their faces! The CDC has said that it is not airborne!!! Well, CDC, how about these two Dallas nurses?

Also an investigation had found that some workers at the Dallas hospital, Texas Health Presbyterian, had layered some of their protective gear and taped their gloves to their hands, both of which can increase the risk of contracting the virus. How can they take off the layers without touching the contaminated gloves?

West Africa suffered a setback Wednesday when Dr. Sheik Umar Khan, one of the top doctors treating the virus patients, caught  Ebola, even though he was wearing protective gear. What is this telling us? The fight against Ebola is taking a turn toward it being airborne.

The other Dallas Ebola Nurse, Amber Vinson, ‘Should Not Have Traveled,’ CDC Head Says. She had also contracted Ebola in Dallas and was flown on Wednesday to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. It was reported by the CDC that  Emory and NIH units are two of the four facilities in the United States that are specially equipped to handle high contagious diseases such as Ebola.
